Heaton Park

Sloping Victorian park with Roman fort remains and a 19th-century pavilion

A formal Victorian park sloping down from Heaton to the Ouseburn valley, containing the slight remains of a Roman milecastle (part of the Hadrian's Wall garrison rather than the wall itself) and a handsome glasshouse pavilion. The bowling greens, formal flowerbeds, and view down to Jesmond Dene from the upper terrace make it one of the more atmospheric of the city's outer-suburb parks.

A 25-minute walk from the city centre or a short bus ride to Heaton. Combine with Jesmond Dene for a long suburban walk; the two are connected by the Ouseburn footpath.
