Segedunum Roman Fort

The easternmost fort of Hadrian's Wall, with a 35-metre viewing tower

The eastern terminus of Hadrian's Wall, in Wallsend (which takes its name from this place). The fort itself is laid out as a stone footprint on the ground; the museum next door covers the history of Roman Britain with one of the best-restored bath-houses on the wall and a reconstructed gateway. A 35-metre viewing tower lets you see the full plan of the fort from above and the Swan Hunter shipyard beyond.

Easy to reach on the Tyne and Wear Metro — Wallsend station is a five-minute walk. Allow two hours. A good first stop on a Hadrian's Wall trip and the closest of the major forts to the city.
