Tyneside Cinema

The UK's last full-time newsreel cinema, restored to Art Deco glory

Independent cinema in a restored Art Deco picture house off Pilgrim Street, with four screens covering arthouse, world cinema, classics, and occasional mainstream titles. The Classic Screen, with its original 1937 plaster ceiling and brass fittings, is one of the loveliest small auditoriums anywhere. The cafe-bar on the ground floor is open through the day.

Membership gets you discounted tickets and free coffee refills; non-members pay a modest premium. Good for a rainy afternoon and the best place in town to see a slightly off-mainstream new release.

A story
The Tyneside Cinema was opened in 1937 as the News Theatre, showing rolling newsreels six days a week. It is now the only purpose-built newsreel cinema still operating as a cinema anywhere in the UK, and one of the few remaining unaltered Art Deco picture houses in Britain.
