Warkworth Beach, also reached from the nearby town of Amble, is a wide arc of sand at the mouth of the River Coquet. The beach is part of a Northumberland AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and sees a fraction of the visitors who travel to Bamburgh or Seahouses further north, which makes it a better choice for those wanting space and quiet.
The dunes at the back of the beach are good for birdwatching — the estuary draws waders and wildfowl year-round, and Coquet Island just offshore is an important RSPB seabird reserve (accessible only on scheduled boat trips from Amble). Swimming is possible in summer; currents can be strong near the river mouth, so take local advice.
