Warkworth is a handsome village on the River Coquet where the medieval street plan is still largely intact. The village is dominated by its castle, a substantial Percy family fortress with a remarkable hermitage carved out of the rock beside the river — accessible by rowing boat. It is one of the most picturesque small castle towns in Northumberland.
The Church of St Lawrence at the top of the main street has a Norman chancel worth seeing. Warkworth Beach is a short walk away and offers wide sands with views to Coquet Island. There is provision for camping and caravanning near the village, making it a convenient base for exploring the northern Northumberland coast.
