Bolton's pub scene centres on the town's working-class tradition of the local. The oldest and most visited is Ye Olde Man & Scythe on Churchgate, a seventeenth-century timber-framed building with genuine historical weight — the Earl of Derby was imprisoned here before his execution in 1651. It serves real ales alongside standard pub fare and is the most atmospheric option in the town centre.
The market area has several unpretentious cafes that have been serving tea and sandwiches to stallholders and shoppers for decades. For something more contemporary, the streets around Deansgate and Bradshawgate have a range of bars and restaurants that reflect the town's demographic mix, including South Asian restaurants that are among the better options for an evening meal. Bolton doesn't have the bar density of Manchester city centre, but the right pub here — warm, unpretentious, genuinely local — is well worth finding.
