Chester Zoo

One of Europe's largest and most progressive zoos, three miles from the city centre

Chester Zoo is consistently ranked among the top zoos in Europe and is one of the most visited paid attractions in the United Kingdom. It covers 128 acres on the edge of the city and is home to over 35,000 animals across 500 species, including a significant number of endangered species bred in captivity.

What sets Chester apart from older British zoos is its genuine commitment to natural habitats: the enclosures are large, the landscaping thoughtful, and several exhibits — particularly Islands, a recreated Southeast Asian island chain covering 10 acres — are genuinely immersive. The zoo operates as a conservation charity and runs breeding programmes for Asiatic lions, snow leopards, orangutans, and others.

A full visit easily takes a day. The zoo is about three miles north of the city centre; buses run from the city, and the zoo has extensive car parking. It is popular with families, and weekends in summer are very busy — arrive early.
