Parish Church of St Elphin

The medieval parish church at the heart of old Warrington, dedicated to a 6th-century bishop of Carlisle, has one of the tallest spires in England — rising to around 88 metres and visible for miles across the flat Cheshire plain. The current structure is largely 14th- and 15th-century, though there has been a church on this site since at least the 10th century.

Inside, the church has fine Victorian stained glass, monuments to local worthies, and a pleasant churchyard. It is worth a short visit not just for the architecture but as a reminder that Warrington was a place of some importance long before the Industrial Revolution remade the north of England.
