A mile downstream from the bridge, Abingdon Lock is the most popular walk in town. The lock itself dates from 1790 and was rebuilt in 1928, and is still operated by the Environment Agency keeper during the season — narrowboats, day cruisers, and the occasional rowing eight all pass through.
The path from the town to the lock crosses Andersey Island, a 273-acre flood meadow grazed by cattle and dotted with willows and small pools. It is one of the better short walks in the upper Thames and ends, if you keep going, at the Nag's Head pub at Culham Lock.
