Abingdon works year-round but is at its best between May and September, when the river meadows are green, the punts and rowing boats are out, and the riverside pubs spill onto their terraces. Late May brings the rhododendrons in Albert Park and the start of the rowing season.
October is worth timing a visit for the Michaelmas Fair, when a full travelling funfair takes over the entire market square and surrounding streets for two evenings. Winter is quiet and damp — Andersey Island regularly floods — but the Christmas market in early December has a small, traditional feel.
Coronations, jubilees, and major anniversaries trigger the celebrated bun-throwing ceremony from the County Hall roof. It happens roughly once every few years and is the most Abingdon thing imaginable.
