Andersey Island

Andersey Island is the 273-acre flood meadow south-east of Abingdon Bridge, formed where the Thames splits into two channels around a long oval of low-lying grass. It is one of the few accessible river-island meadows on the upper Thames and is grazed by cattle in summer.

The level path along the towpath side passes Abingdon Lock and continues to Culham, making for a flat three-mile circular walk if you cross at the bridges at either end. In winter the meadow regularly floods; in summer it is a working pasture with skylarks overhead and dragonflies along the ditches.
