The Booth Museum is a wonderfully eccentric Victorian museum on Dyke Road, about a mile from the seafront. Hundreds of taxidermied British birds stand in glass cases in naturalistic dioramas; above them, drawers of pinned butterflies and beetles fill the shelving to the ceiling. There are also dinosaur bones, whale skeletons, and a remarkable collection of bird eggs.
The building itself is part of the appeal: a purpose-built Victorian specimen case that has barely changed since it opened in 1874. Entry is free. It closes on Thursdays and Sundays, which seems right for a place this particular — it's the kind of museum that works best when visited with a sense of unhurried curiosity rather than as a destination on a crowded tourist itinerary.
