Canterbury Roman Museum

Underground museum built around an in-situ Roman mosaic

The Roman town of Durovernum Cantiacorum lies, in pieces, under most of modern Canterbury — and a few metres below Butchery Lane sit the well-preserved remains of a Roman courtyard house with a fine mosaic floor and a hypocaust heating system. The museum is built directly around them, so you walk on glass panels above the pavement and look down into the rooms as they were laid out.

Beyond the mosaic, the displays cover daily life in third-century Roman Britain: pottery, hairpins, oil lamps, and a reconstructed Roman market stall you can poke around. Small, low-tech, and surprisingly engaging — an hour is enough.
