Dane John Mound and Gardens

18th-century gardens around an Iron Age burial mound

Tucked inside the southern city walls, the Dane John Gardens are an unexpected pocket of green in the middle of the old town. The mound at the centre — known locally as "the Dungeon" — is at least Iron Age and was probably a burial mound, later reused as a Norman motte. It was landscaped into a public garden in the 1790s and has been a city park ever since.

Steps lead up the mound to a small monument and the best low-level view of the cathedral. The lime-tree avenue along the wall is a pleasant short cut between the bus station and the High Street, and the bandstand sees occasional summer concerts. Free; always open.
