Guildford Spike

Restored Edwardian workhouse casual ward

The restored casual ward — the "spike" — of the Guildford Union Workhouse, an Edwardian institution where homeless men were given a night's shelter in exchange for a morning's hard labour breaking stones. The Spike is one of the only intact examples of its kind in Britain; the cells, the stone-breaking yards, and the bathing room are all preserved.

The volunteer-run museum opens on Saturdays and runs guided tours that give a strong, unflinching picture of late-Victorian and Edwardian destitution. A sobering, valuable hour.

A story
The 'spike' was the term for the Casual Ward of the workhouse, where tramps could spend one night in exchange for breaking a fixed weight of stone. The spike Guildford preserved is one of the only intact examples in Britain — most were demolished after the welfare reforms of the 1940s.
