The steep cobbled High Street is the historic spine of Guildford and one of the best-preserved medieval high streets in southern England. It runs down from the Holy Trinity Church at the top to the River Wey at the foot, lined with timber-framed and Georgian buildings, the Guildhall and its clock, and a working mix of shops, pubs, and cafés.
The cobbles are bumpy enough that the street has to be closed to traffic at the busiest times. Walk it twice — once each direction — to get a sense of the changing scale and the side passages, several of which lead into hidden Tudor courtyards.
