Guildford Medieval Synagogue

The oldest synagogue remains in Britain, under a High Street shop

Underneath a Costa Coffee on Guildford High Street are the remains of what may be the oldest synagogue in Britain — a small medieval undercroft uncovered during shop renovations in 1995. Archaeological investigation dated it tentatively to around 1180, predating the standard contender at Lincoln. If the dating is right, this is the only physical trace of England's medieval Jewish community to survive in its original location.

The undercroft is closed to the public most of the time but opens for occasional heritage-day tours. Even the locked entrance and the small interpretive plaque are worth a stop on the walk down the High Street.

A story
The remains were rediscovered in 1995 during shop renovations and tentatively dated to around 1180, which would make this the oldest surviving synagogue in Britain. The Jewish community of medieval Guildford was expelled, along with all English Jews, by Edward I's edict of 1290.
