The Mount Cemetery

Quiet Victorian hilltop cemetery where Lewis Carroll lies buried

A late-Victorian cemetery on a hill west of the town centre, set out in 1856 with serpentine paths and rows of yew trees. The view from the upper terraces across to the cathedral is one of the better quiet panoramas of Guildford.

Lewis Carroll's grave is the cemetery's main draw — a plain white-marble cross at plot J/F1, near the upper boundary, with a small plaque added in 1932 by the Lewis Carroll Society. Carroll spent his last years with his sisters at The Chestnuts on Castle Hill, and died in Guildford during the influenza epidemic of January 1898.

A story
Lewis Carroll — Charles Lutwidge Dodgson — is buried in a quiet plot near the back of the cemetery. He died in Guildford in 1898 while staying at his sisters' house, The Chestnuts, at the bottom of the hill, and the funeral was held at the parish church a few hundred metres away.
