A handsome Victorian villa on Castle Hill, just below the castle keep, where six of Lewis Carroll's sisters lived in old age and where Carroll himself died of influenza on 14 January 1898. The house is private but the front is easily visible from the street, and a small plaque marks the connection.
Pair with a visit to Lewis Carroll's grave at the nearby Mount Cemetery and the Alice statue on the riverside path. Guildford was Carroll's home in retirement and gives the most concrete sense of him as a man rather than a literary brand.
