Waverley Abbey is the ruin of England's first Cistercian abbey, set in quiet countryside southwest of Guildford. The surviving walls are atmospheric rather than grand, but the historical importance makes the site much stronger than a generic village ruin.
The abbey works well as a short heritage excursion, especially with Farnham, riverside walks, or other Surrey countryside stops. Wear suitable shoes after rain and go for history and setting rather than dense interpretation.
