Reading is not primarily a tourist destination, but it has more to offer than the shopping centres suggest. The medieval abbey ruins and the Reading Museum are both worth your time. Reading Gaol — where Oscar Wilde was imprisoned — is the one site in England most associated with the town. For music, the Reading Festival in August draws some of the biggest names in rock and indie; outside of that weekend, the town has a decent live music scene centred around the independent venues.
