Richmond Theatre

Richmond Theatre on Little Green is one of the most attractive Victorian theatres still in operation in greater London. Designed by the architect Frank Matcham and opened in 1899, it seats around 800 in a traditional horseshoe auditorium with original plasterwork and a warm red-and-gold interior. The building itself is Grade II* listed.

The theatre runs a year-round programme of drama, comedy, musicals, and touring productions. It often receives pre-West End runs and touring productions that play Richmond for a week before moving to London. The location is excellent — immediately adjacent to Richmond Green, and a short walk from the station and the riverside pubs.

A story
Richmond Theatre opened in 1899 and is one of the few surviving examples of a Frank Matcham design still in regular use. Matcham was the most prolific theatre architect of the late Victorian era, responsible for over a hundred venues including the London Palladium and the Hackney Empire. Richmond's theatre retains most of its original auditorium fittings, including the ornate plasterwork and the distinctive circular ceiling.
