Tide Mills

Ruined industrial village on the shingle flats between Seaford and Newhaven.

Tide Mills is the ruined remains of a village and industrial site west of Seaford, on the flat coastal ground toward Newhaven. It is not picturesque in the usual Sussex sense; it is bleak, open, and interesting.

Walk here along the beach or from Bishopstone if you like abandoned places and coastal industrial history. There is little interpretation on site, so read up first or let the atmosphere do most of the work.

A story
Tide Mills was once a working village built around a tide-powered flour mill, then later became entangled with seaplane experiments and wartime clearance. What remains is low, strange, and exposed: foundations, beach, and wind.
