Medieval Town Walls

One of England's finest surviving medieval wall circuits

Address Western Esplanade, Southampton

Most English city walls were torn down in the nineteenth century. Southampton's were not, and the result is one of the finest surviving circuits in the country. About half a mile of the fourteenth-century walls still stands, running from the Bargate in the north down to God's House Tower in the south-east. You can walk along the top of the arcaded western section, looking out over what was once the waterfront. The towers — Arundel, Catchcold, Polymond — are all labelled and open to inspect. Give it an hour and you will come away knowing the city properly.
