Things to Do

Southampton rewards the curious visitor who looks beyond the shopping centre. The medieval Old Town is a genuine gem — walkable, free, and largely overlooked by travellers passing through on their way to a cruise. A circuit of the Medieval Walls takes under an hour and gives you a real sense of the city's history. The two surviving medieval gatehouses, the Bargate and God's House Tower, bookend it. The Tudor House on Bugle Street and the haunting ruins of Holyrood Church are the other Old Town essentials.

For the Titanic and Mayflower history that gives the city its emotional pull, the SeaCity Museum is the central exhibit; the Titanic Engineers' Memorial, the Titanic Musicians' Memorial, the Pilgrim Fathers Memorial, and Canute Chambers all bring out further details of the city's maritime memory. The D-Day Wall along the old quay is another quietly powerful spot.

For art, the Southampton City Art Gallery has one of England's best provincial collections. For a quirky excursion, take the ferry to ride the Hythe Pier Railway, the world's oldest. The Lutyens-designed Southampton Cenotaph is the prototype of his more famous Whitehall version.
