Day Trips

Southampton is a useful base for the western reaches of Hampshire and the Solent.

Winchester, 25 minutes by train, is the historic capital of Wessex with the longest medieval cathedral in Europe and the round table that Henry VIII claimed was King Arthur's. A short, dense day.

Portsmouth, 50 minutes by train, has the Mary Rose, Nelson's HMS Victory, the Spinnaker Tower, and a fine harbour. A naval-history alternative to Southampton's merchant-marine story.

The New Forest is the obvious day out for landscape: ancient enclosed common land grazed by free-roaming ponies and deer, with picturesque villages — Lyndhurst, Beaulieu, Brockenhurst — and excellent walking. Trains run to Brockenhurst (20 minutes); a car helps to explore further.

The Isle of Wight is a Red Funnel ferry from Southampton (around an hour each way to East Cowes). The island has Osborne House (Queen Victoria's holiday retreat), Carisbrooke Castle, the Needles, and the famous coloured sands of Alum Bay.

Beaulieu Abbey and the National Motor Museum — about 30 minutes by car west of Southampton, on the New Forest fringe. The combination of medieval ruin and one of the world's great motor museums is unexpected and worthwhile.
