East Cliff Railway

A Victorian cliff funicular, one of three in Bournemouth, climbing the East Cliff in under a minute

The East Cliff Railway is one of three short Victorian and Edwardian cliff funiculars that still operate in Bournemouth, climbing the chalk cliff from the promenade to the road above near the Russell-Cotes Museum. The original carriages were built in 1908 and are still in use, with painted livery and small benches.

The journey takes about thirty seconds and costs a pound. The view from the upper station, taking in the whole sweep of bay from Hengistbury Head to Old Harry Rocks, is unbeatable for a flat-footed visitor. Both East Cliff and West Cliff lifts run from Easter to October; Fisherman's Walk operates a more limited schedule.

A story
Three cliff lifts were built in Bournemouth between 1908 and 1935 -- West Cliff, East Cliff, and Fisherman's Walk -- and all three still operate seasonally. The Fisherman's Walk lift, at 128 feet, is sometimes claimed as the world's shortest funicular. The East Cliff lift was closed for several years after a 2016 landslip and reopened in 2025 after extensive restoration.
