Bude Sea Pool

A 1930s tidal swimming pool cut into the rocks — free, open year-round

The Bude Sea Pool is a partially man-made tidal swimming pool cut into the rocks at the north end of Summerleaze Beach. Built in the 1930s, it fills and drains with each tide cycle, ensuring the water is constantly refreshed with seawater from the Atlantic. The pool is free to use and open year-round, though it is at its most pleasant in summer when the seawater temperature reaches 16–18°C. In winter, a dedicated community of cold-water swimmers uses it regularly.

The pool was restored in recent years with funding from the local community and has become a focal point for outdoor swimming in north Cornwall. The setting — surrounded by rock, with the Atlantic visible just beyond the pool edge — is genuinely dramatic. Dogs are permitted outside of the main summer bathing season. The adjacent rocks are excellent for watching Atlantic swells in rough weather.

A story
The Bude Sea Pool was built in the 1930s and has been in continuous use since. It fills and empties with the tide, so the water is constantly renewed. A volunteer Friends group keeps it maintained. In winter, a small group of regular cold-water swimmers use it daily, and the pool has developed a cult following among wild swimming enthusiasts who come specifically to swim here in December and January.
