Summerleaze Beach

Bude's central beach — family-friendly, sheltered by the breakwater

Summerleaze is Bude's main beach, a broad sandy cove at the mouth of the River Neet immediately below the town centre. The breakwater to the north provides some shelter from the prevailing Atlantic swell, and the beach is reliably family-friendly as a result — the waves are manageable for children and the sand extends well at low tide. The adjacent Bude Sea Pool, a large tidal swimming pool cut into the rocks at the north end of the beach, provides calmer swimming when the surf is up.

The beach is a short walk from the high street and the canal lock. Changing facilities, a beach cafe, and parking are all immediately adjacent. In high summer it fills up; arriving early in the morning or after 4pm avoids the worst crowds. The rock platforms exposed at low tide toward the sea pool are worth exploring for rock pools.
