Lydford Gorge

Southwest England's deepest gorge with dramatic waterfalls

The deepest gorge in south-west England, carved by the River Lyd into a narrow wooded ravine. The main path follows the water from the entrance at Lydford village to the White Lady waterfall at the southern end — a 1.5-mile walk each way through oak woodland, past whirlpools and rushing falls. The most dramatic section is the Devil's Cauldron, a turbulent series of potholes near the northern entrance.

The National Trust manages the gorge and charges for entry. The full circular walk takes around two hours; a short loop from the northern entrance to the Devil's Cauldron takes thirty minutes.
