Church of St Petroc

Medieval church with intricate carved Devon slate headstones

A medieval church dedicated to St Petroc, the sixth-century Celtic missionary who is patron saint of Cornwall and Devon. The building dates largely from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, though the site is much older. The churchyard is notable for its carved Devon slate headstones — some of the most intricate examples in the county, with skull-and-crossbone motifs and elaborate lettering cut into the dark local stone.

Free to enter. The church is usually unlocked during daylight hours.
