Widecombe Fair takes place on the second Tuesday of September each year and has done so for centuries, attracting farmers, traders, and visitors from across Devon and beyond. It is primarily an agricultural fair — livestock, produce, and crafts — but the fun fair, the morris dancers, and the general festive chaos make it a proper event rather than a solemn agricultural show.
The fair draws several thousand visitors to a village with a resident population of a few hundred, which means parking in the surrounding lanes and a lengthy walk in. This is part of the experience. The rest of the year, a wooden sculpture of the song's characters stands in the village, and the song is performed at local pubs during fair season. If you happen to be in Devon in early September, timing your visit to coincide with the fair is worth it.
