When to Go

Dartmouth is at its best from May to September, when the ferry to Greenway runs and the steam railway operates its full schedule. The town can be busy with visitors in July and August — accommodation should be booked well ahead in peak season. Spring and autumn offer the best combination of decent weather and manageable crowds.

Winter is quiet but the harbour is still atmospheric, and the town has enough restaurants and pubs to keep you occupied. The Dartmouth Food Festival in late October is one of the best food events in the South West, drawing serious cooks and producers.
