Exeter is well connected by rail. Great Western Railway runs direct services from London Paddington in just under two hours — one of the faster intercity journeys in the south-west. There are also direct services from Bristol (about an hour), Birmingham (two and a half hours), and connections to the rest of Devon and Cornwall onward.
Exeter has two main stations: Exeter St Davids, the principal intercity station about ten minutes' walk from the city centre, and Exeter Central, closer to the High Street and Cathedral Close. Most long-distance trains stop at St Davids; local services call at both.
By road, the M5 motorway runs to the north of the city, with junctions 29 and 30 giving direct access. London is around two and a half hours in light traffic, though this is rarely achieved in practice. National Express coaches serve Exeter from London Victoria and other cities.
Exeter Airport, six miles east of the city, serves a range of UK and European destinations — useful for connecting onward to the rest of Devon without a long drive. Bus services connect the airport to the city centre.
