Eating Out

For a small village, Porlock and its surrounds eat well. The two pubs at Porlock Weir — the Ship Inn and the Café/Bottom Ship — are the obvious lunch stops, both serving local crab, mackerel, and Exmoor lamb in summer; the Ship in particular has a lovely terrace overlooking the harbour. In Porlock itself, the Ship Inn (a separate establishment dating to the thirteenth century, sometimes called the Top Ship) is the village's main pub, with reasonable bar food and Exmoor ale.

For something more substantial, The Café at The Big Cheese in the centre of Porlock makes excellent ploughman's lunches with local cheeses, and Miller's at the Anchor in Porlock Weir does ambitious seafood-focused evening menus. Cream teas are everywhere in the summer; the tea garden at Selworthy is the prettiest setting if you happen to be passing.
