Things to Do

The village itself is pleasant rather than spectacular — but the surrounding combes, hills, and coast are some of the best in Exmoor. Porlock Hill, one of the steepest main roads in England, climbs the wooded scarp west of the village. The small harbour at Porlock Weir gives access to the South West Coast Path, which leads through ancient oak woods to the tiny clifftop church at Culbone.

Two villages on the National Trust's Holnicote estate — thatched Selworthy and stone-built Luccombe — are within easy walking distance, and Dunkery Beacon, the highest point of Exmoor, rises just to the south. Allow at least a long weekend to do the area justice.
