Luccombe Village

Stone-built village in a sheltered hollow below Dunkery Hill

Three kilometres south-east of Porlock, Luccombe is a small village of stone-built cottages with thatched and slate-tiled roofs, set in a deep sheltered hollow below the north flank of Dunkery Hill. It is the quietest of the surrounding villages — barely a hundred residents — and largely owned by the National Trust as part of the Holnicote Estate.

The fifteenth-century church of St Mary the Virgin has fine wooden ceilings and a peaceful churchyard. Just beyond the village, footpaths lead up Horner Combe through ancient sessile oak woods to the Cloutsham viewpoint and on toward Dunkery Beacon.
