Porlock Weir

Tiny tidal harbour with pebble beach and seaside cottages, 2 km west of Porlock village

A short distance west of Porlock village, the road meets the sea at a tiny tidal harbour known as Porlock Weir. A handful of fishermen's cottages, two pubs, a small chandler's, and an art gallery line the harbour wall. At low tide the boats sit on the mud and gravel; at high tide the basin floods and the small craft refloat.

The pebble beach stretches east for a couple of miles toward Hurlstone Point, with views across the Bristol Channel to the Welsh coast on clear days. The harbour was once a small but busy port shipping oak bark and limestone; today it survives mainly as a starting point for South West Coast Path walks.
