Dunkery Beacon

Highest point on Exmoor and in Somerset, with views to South Wales on a clear day

At 519 metres, Dunkery Beacon is the highest point on Exmoor and in the county of Somerset. The summit is a low rocky cairn surrounded by heather and bilberry moorland, with views in every direction — the Bristol Channel and the South Wales coast to the north, the wooded combes of Exmoor to the south, and on a very clear day the moors of Dartmoor far to the south-west.

The walk up is straightforward — about an hour from the lay-by on the road across the moor, longer from Selworthy or Wheddon Cross. It is exposed at the top and can be cold and very windy even in summer; carry waterproofs. In late summer the heather flowers and the moor turns purple.
