Swanage Beach is the long curve of pale sand running for a mile north from the pier, the centre of the town's summer life. The water shelves gently and is sheltered by Ballard Down from the prevailing south-westerlies, which makes the bay calm enough for safe swimming most days. Lifeguards patrol the central beach in season; pedalos, deck chairs, and an inflatable splash park appear in July and August.
The seafront promenade behind the beach runs from the pier north to the boating lake at Shore Road, with the usual collection of ice-cream vendors, fish-and-chip shops, and beach huts to rent. Combine an afternoon at the beach with a walk south to Peveril Point and the cliffs above the lifeboat station for an evening view back across the bay.
