Darwin's Birthplace — The Mount

The Mount, a large Georgian house on the western bank of the Severn, is where Charles Darwin was born on 12 February 1809 and grew up. Darwin spent the first 27 years of his life in Shrewsbury, attending school here and forming the habits of observation and curiosity that would eventually produce On the Origin of Species. The house is currently being restored and developed as a heritage site following a major campaign to open it to the public.

In town, Darwin's presence is felt at the library on Castle Gates (which houses his original school library collections), and a bronze statue in the town square — unusually thoughtful in demeanour for a public statue — faces the main shopping street. The Darwin Shopping Centre is named for him, which Darwin himself might have found both flattering and baffling.

A story
Charles Darwin was born at The Mount on 12 February 1809 and lived here until he was 27 years old. The house shaped his interest in natural history through access to the family library and a large walled garden, which his father — a prosperous physician — cultivated with scientific thoroughness. Darwin himself said that his childhood in Shrewsbury was crucial to the formation of his scientific outlook.
