Shrewsbury's medieval street plan has survived remarkably intact, making it one of the best places in England to simply walk and look. The lanes, passages, and "shuts" (the local term for the alleyways threading between buildings) reward aimless exploration, and there is real substance to the history — the castle, the abbey, the Darwin house, and the market are all worth visiting in their own right.
