The Hawthorns

The Hawthorns is the home ground of West Bromwich Albion Football Club, known as the Baggies, and it holds a particular distinction: it is the highest football ground above sea level in the entire Football League, sitting at 168 metres. The ground has occupied the same site since 1900 and has seen various redevelopments while retaining its position in a residential area between West Bromwich and Handsworth.

Stadium tours are available on non-matchdays and take in the dressing rooms, the directors' suite, and the pitch-side view. Matchday visits give the best sense of the ground's atmosphere, particularly when the club is in the Championship, when West Midlands derbies against Birmingham City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, or Aston Villa generate a ferocious intensity. The Hawthorns is served by its own Metrolink stop on the West Midlands Metro tram line, making it easy to reach from Birmingham city centre.

A story
The Hawthorns, at 168 metres above sea level, is the highest ground in the Football League — a quirk that visiting managers have occasionally blamed for the thin air affecting their players' fitness. West Bromwich Albion have played here since 1900, and the ground has survived the club's repeated yo-yoing between the Premier League and the Championship through the 2000s and 2010s entirely intact, resisting the pressure to relocate that displaced many of their rivals.
