Grass Wood is one of the largest broadleaved woods in the Yorkshire Dales, rising on limestone terraces north-west of Grassington. It is mainly ash woodland, broken by rocky glades and rough paths that feel far removed from the busy village square.
It is best as part of a circular walk through the valley rather than a quick in-and-out. Spring flowers, birds, and the pale limestone underfoot give the wood a different mood from the open fells.
