When to Go

Huddersfield is a year-round town without strong seasonal peaks. Summer brings the best weather for walking the surrounding moors and for clear views from Castle Hill — when the visibility is good, the panorama stretches deep into the Pennines and beyond. Spring and autumn are fine for most activities; the light on the valley sides in October is particularly good.

Winter is honest: the Pennines above town can be bleak and the weather rolls in quickly. But the town itself functions perfectly well, the pubs are warm, and the curry houses are at their best on a cold evening. The Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (hcmf//) usually takes place in November and draws a serious international audience for new music.

Rugby league season runs from February through October, and following the Huddersfield Giants at the John Smith's Stadium is a genuinely local experience — the crowd is partisan and knowledgeable, and the match-day atmosphere has nothing of the sanitised stadium feel.
