The Chevin is the sandstone ridge that rises steeply behind Otley, giving the town its sheltered character and its best views. The Chevin Forest Park stretches along the ridge for several kilometres, a mix of oak woodland, open heather, and rocky outcrops. Several marked trails climb from the town through the trees to the viewpoints at the top.
From the summit at Surprise View, Wharfedale opens wide below — the river, the town, the patchwork of field and moor running east toward Harewood and west toward Ilkley. On a clear day you can see the cooling towers at Ferrybridge 30 kilometres away. The return walk from town takes about two hours at a moderate pace. Dogs and families are welcome, and the paths are well-maintained year-round.
