Richmond has no railway station of its own — the line closed under the Beeching cuts in 1969 — so most travellers arrive by road from the A1(M), turning west at Scotch Corner for the four-mile run along the A6108 into town. The drive from London takes around four and a half hours, from Leeds about ninety minutes, from York an hour.
For arrivals by train, Darlington is the nearest mainline station, on the East Coast Main Line about an hour from York and three hours from London King's Cross. Local buses (the X26 and X27, run by Hodgsons) connect Darlington to Richmond in about half an hour, with reasonable frequency on weekdays and a thinner Sunday service. A taxi from Darlington costs roughly £25.
Newcastle and Leeds Bradford airports are the closest with international flights, both around an hour by road.
