The two great categories in Yorkshire are walking and ruined abbeys. The Dales and the North York Moors offer some of England's finest long-distance walking — the Coast to Coast Walk, the Pennine Way and the Cleveland Way all cross the region. The dissolution of the monasteries left Yorkshire with a remarkable concentration of Cistercian abbey ruins; Fountains Abbey, Rievaulx and Bolton Priory are all worth half a day each. Add York Minster, the National Railway Museum in York, and the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford for a properly varied week.
