Theatre Royal Wakefield

The Theatre Royal Wakefield is a small, perfectly preserved late-Victorian theatre by Frank Matcham, the most celebrated theatre architect of the period (he also designed the Hackney Empire and the London Coliseum). Built in 1894 with just 510 seats, it is one of the most intimate Matcham auditoriums still in regular use anywhere in the country.

The interior is the main appeal — gilded plasterwork, painted ceiling, deep red velvet — but the programming is also worthwhile: a mix of touring productions, classical concerts, comedy, and the annual pantomime. Worth checking what is on if you are staying overnight.
