The Black Horse on Church Street is one of Whitby's oldest pubs, with a building going back to the 16th century and a continuous licence from 1788. The interior is tiny, low-beamed, and lined with old photographs of the harbour and the lifeboat.
The bar serves a rotating list of Yorkshire ales and the pub's own small-batch beers from a microbrewery upstairs. They still keep a tin of snuff on the counter, and a slate board lists tapas-style local snacks rather than full meals. Cash and card both work, but it can get tight inside on a Saturday night.
